The Spine:Law of Side Bending and Rotation

  • Cervical (neck) is Lordotic so when there is side-bending the vertebrae turn in the same direction (spina in the opposite)
  • Thorasic (ribcage) is Kyphotic so when there is side-bending the vertebrae turn in the opposite direction (spina in the same)
  • Lumbar (lower back) is Lordotic so when there is side-bending the vertebrae turn in the same direction (spina in the opposite)
  • Sacral (tailbone) is Kyphotic but should be no movement in side-bending!!! Or rotation)
This affects how we can deepen a posture without creating compression in the spine.
